Although Bir is a tiny little town, there is no shortage of good food options at all, with the quality getting better and better all the time! One of the most classic places is Garden Cafe! One of the oldest establishments in Bir, it was started and is run by a Tibetan family.

A small comfortable cafe, the ambience is inviting as soon as you enter. With the trademark maroon bouganvillea creepers hanging from the gate, the greenery and natural feel of the place is very peaceful. You are greeted by the smiling Tibetan family and the aroma of coffee!

There is an open kitchen to the right as soon as you enter, with a an earthen oven for wood fired pizza! There is comfortable outdoor seating under the shade of trees, as well as indoor seats for lounging on cold winter days. The cafe also has the facility of a gift shop!

With sweet little flower pots hooked onto the wall, the decor is adorable. Notice boards announcing local events and cultural programs, graffiti and drawings made by customers, as well as shelves of varieties of books make even solo time at the café pleasant and enjoyable!

The interior seating area is equally inviting! With minimalist white interiors, there are cushions for guests to lounge on, and one can comfortably settle into a good book while sipping on a coffee. Plenty of natural light makes it a well lit and ventilated space!

One of my favourite things to do is to sit at my favourite table and look at the beautiful fields outside. This coupled with a good book and hot chocolate is how I often spend my Sundays in the colony. Being a small town, I have become friends with the staff too!

Interestingly, you can often find books of different languages on the bookshelf! Since the cafe is frequented by people from all over the world, they often leave behind books for others to enjoy, and this collection is different every time I visit!

Coming to the menu! Offering mostly continental food, this is one of the very few pizza places in town. Freshly fired wood oven pizzas are excellent and my personal favourite is the Al Fungi!

The breakfast menu is also superb, ranging from eggs of different kind to pancake varieties, as well as fresh fruit bowls, yogurt, peanut butter toast, etc. I love the fruit pancake - smeared with Nutella and honey, it's a delicious and filling breakfast!

Garden cafe is also one of the few places where you get good spaghetti and pasta. Made with freshly made local noodles, it has just the right balance of flavours and herbs. Not to add, it looks quite picturesque! Yummm! 😛

I love Garden Cafe cappuccino, its my personal favourite. But for all the hot chocolate lovers out there, they have a good preparation! The different teas are worth trying out as well!

On a cold, rainy day, a hot bowl of Garden Cafe special soup is absolutely perfect! Filled with lots of vegetables like pumpkin, zucchini, beans and broccoli, perfectly seasoned with sesame seeds and coriander, this one bowl meal is really filling - and healthy too!

It's quite a joy to sit and wait while your food arrives when there are so many beautiful flowers to look at! Changing with every season, these blossoms are almost a signature of garden cafe now!

I usually visit the gift shop while I am waiting for my food, if not to buy anything, but just to look at the interesting items on display. You get Tibetan jewellery, mediation bowls and cushions, Himachali woollen shawls as well as kurtas and other garments here!

There are many sweet souvenirs here to take back home, a lot of them being Tibetan artefacts. Beautifully crafted objects in brass and turquoise, it's quite a conventional stop for doing your shopping while waiting for your food!

    Walk through nearby fields
As you leave the cafe, right in front of it are meadows with hundreds of prayer flags suspended from trees. Usually filled with cherry blossoms, I love taking a walk here after my meal, and often watching the sunset ❤
