Despite being born near the region, I never had a chance to visit the tomb of Akbar but when my cousins were heading there I made sure no opportunity was lost and i joined them on their journey back to the Mughal times!

One of the most beautiful and peaceful places I've visited. This place has the tomb of the Mughal emperor Akbar with an absolutely gorgeous Garden and a beautiful ornamental building structure that took my breath away.. while learning about our rich past!

There was ample place for parking available in here which made it very convenient. In the adjacent garden, there was an abundance of deers and peacocks. Not only that, especially being a bird lover, the number of parrots here filled me with such happiness.

    Serenity around the tomb
One thing about this monument is it's on the main road where traffic runs through out the day but as soon as you enter it you'll feel a change of an era.. from honking trucks to chirps of birds. Butterflies welcome you and the trees show you path..

The tomb was great in itself with its magnificent architecture and boldness while the history was something to marvel at..

One of the guides told me the story of it all as well about how the tomb of Akbar was built by his son prince Salim also called Jahangir. Hearing what lead to its construction and all about the mughal empire was engaging and made my experience here more exciting.

It was all so impressive, I ended up sitting before the garden and tomb in contemplation watching the man made wonders and the natural beauty around together in peace.

Sikandra is the mausoleum of Emperor Akbar, the greatest of the Mughals. It is truly befitting his stature. It is nothing like any of the usual Islamic mausoleums, with their central dome structure..

Instead, it starts with a gateway which has 4 minarets of its own! It could be an independent monument. The central structure is amazing, and Akbar's crypt is in the basement of the structure which is accessed through a long walkway.

The amazing thing is the geometry of the structure. Standing at the centre of the structure next to Akbar's grave, you can see a sliver of light as the walkway rises gently up, and in that light you can see the silhouette of the entrance gate of the monument.

The tomb had some amazing features. I remember speaking in one of the columns in the side, and how my voice could be heard through the diagonal column!!! It was so much more than its impressive architecture

What i loved the most was that though the Tomb structure has been presented in a beautiful garden-setting, it has a character full of dignity, sobriety, thoughtfulness and quietitude, rather than of delicacy, gaiety or splendour, in accordance with the personality of Akbar.

I still cant believe it took me all this time to visit but it was worth the wait. Character, substance and beauty..I will always be in awe of this architectural wonder.
