    Lonar Crater
Meteor impact evidence ! Ancient geo formations.Exploring Maharashtra.
I've got a few friends in Mumbai and Pune and they would keep telling me about this amazing place they went to, which is actually a meteor crater that was formed centuries ago ! So I decided to explore this exciting place on my own and what I encountered, left me amazed !!!
  • Buldhana
    Buldhana
Remains of ancient temples.A geo archaeological site !
When I reached this place, what I saw was an amazing expanse of not just the crater, but a lake, &multiple ancient temples surrounding the entire area, in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra. I was instantly aware then, of not just geological, but its religious importance too.
  • Lonar Lake
    Lonar Lake
Lake formed at crater. Religious importance of Lonar.
This lake, which lies in a basalt impact structure, is both saline and alkaline in nature. It has even been mentioned (as I was told) in many ancient texts and scriptures, so anyone could tell that this place has been significant in our country for more than centuries now.
  • Gomukh Temple, Lonar
    Gomukh Temple, Lonar
Ancient hindu architecture.Spring Water crater. Religious significance of Lonar.
One of the most famous temples here is the Gomukh temple, which was constructed during the Puranic times, along the rim of the crater & it also has a perennial spring water. It is one of the most ancient temples in Hindu history & its presence has suffered the ravages of time !

    Gomukh Temple, Lonar
Inside the temple. Holy showers !! Religious significance of Lonar.
You can see people enjoying the sun - freshwater streams in the temple spring & devotees flock around, dipping themselves into the water quite as they do in Ganga ghats. It is canvassed within bright blue clear skies on most days and the entire crater is visible from up here !
  • Gomukh Temple, Lonar
    Gomukh Temple, Lonar
Hindu temple by the Lonar lake.Peaceful meditation !
The best aspect of visiting these temples is that they are far removed from the usual hustle and bustle of city & society. At a certain point of time, you would only see a few people hanging around & it gives you the space & mental peace to take in the beauty of the entire place.

Wildlife photography. Nature and its people.
Personally, i am very afraid of monkeys because they might snatch things from your hand and run away, or slap your face :p... But these creatures looked so fascinating, sitting on top of a rock at a distance, quietly observing everything, that it felt customary to take a picture.
  • Lonar Crater
    Lonar Crater
Fun facts about ancient craters. Ruins from the past !
While I was there, I came across a lot of local information about this geographical site and its origins. The crater was formed during the ice age and over the years, a lot of structures and temples etc developed around it, some of which still stand here (like the one above).
  • Shree Kamalja Devi Temple
    Shree Kamalja Devi Temple
More temples around the lake.Ancient architecture.
This is Shree Kamalja Devi Temple which is flocked with people during Navratri & other such festivals, but during my visit there, it was pretty empty. One can see a lot of women come here & the priests here say that this temple stands for salvation, wealth & relief from diseases.
  • Lonar Lake
    Lonar Lake
At the end, after I had visited as many temples and structures as I could, I came to the lake and stood near the great expanse of it, taking the peaceful silence in and absorbing the relaxing atmosphere that surrounds this environment.

    Lonar Lake
At that time, there hardly any people left in the place and I really enjoyed the solitary nature of this experience. To travel alone is indeed a beautiful experience, especially if you're visiting a place as beautiful and astounding as this old crater !

Sunset view by the lake. Travelling the lakes of Maharashtra
I ended the day with a beautiful sunset landscape. There were some people who had taken the trouble to arrive to this place solely to see the sunset which was really appealing & serene. The lake certainly goes to one of my top favourite places while travelling in Maharashtra !
