Much awaited trip of the year! 🎒
My trip to Leh-Ladakh was a long awaited one. And Bollywood movies only added fuel to the fire (enchanting scenes from 3 Idiots and Jab Tak Hai Jaan). So in the first week of May last year, I finally got the opportunity to travel to Ladakh.

    The snow covered mountains ❤
I must say that even the road leading to Ladakh has its own appeal. When you’re about to reach Ladakh, the very first glimpse of this snow laden heaven brings a twinkle to your eyes!
  • Leh
    Leh
    Heaven on earth! 😱
And then as you enter Leh, the characteristic mountains (yes, the ones which our televisions have made very popular) greet you with their silent white faces. Clouds, Snow , Hills - could there be a more heavenly place than Ladakh?

The food & hospitality ✔The only luxurious hotel in LadakhCental heating being the speciality
I spent the first day in Ladakh acclimatizing with the climatic conditions. For me, two things had an epic showdown. Logic and reason demanded that I should rest. But my incorrigible curiosity kept nagging me to explore this place some more.
  • Hemis Monastery Museum

Over 455 years old palace! 😮
After visiting the monastery next on our itinerary was the Leh palace tour. The palace museum displays an excellent collection of royal jewellery, Chinese Thangkas, crowns, ceremonial dresses, and intellectual paintings.

The palace also has a small library where old texts are preserved. Head over to the wooden balconies on the upper floors for a full panoramic view of the Zanskar mountain range in its various hues.

    The epitome of peace ✌
After savouring a plate of yummy momos we headed to Sanchi Stupa in the evening around 5. Sitting on the hilltop on Chanspa, the white-domed epitome of world peace has been impressively maintained to keep it clean and beautiful, making it the perfect place to catch the sunset.

    Well maintained ✔
Day 3 started a bit early. By 6 am we reached the first stop for the day - Thiksey. Monastery. It is famous for its excellent maintenance and impressive location overlooking many picturesque villages. The mighty statue of Maitreya at the Maitreya Temple left me awestruck!

    Teachings of Buddha 🙆
Marvelling at the paintings of their ferocious deities in DhuKhang i felt enlightened as i read the teachings of Lord Buddha engraved on the pillars. One of the monks also told us about his experience & the history of the monastery.

    What an adventurous journey! 🙆
At 9 am we were all set for a drive to Khardung La. It is the world’s highest motorable road! Also known as K-top, it takes about two to three hours to drive up to Khardung La Pass that is 18,380 feet above the sea level.

    Such dreamy scenery 😮
The drive in itself was a beautiful journey, highlight being the view from the top of snow - capped mountains(almost like being on the roof of the world). Carry oxygen supplies and don’t stay out for more than 10 minutes.

    Shopping at the Bazaar 👜
We returned safe from the adventure and after a quick lunch head to the Leh main market for some souveiner shopping. From Pashmina shawls, prayer flags, pretty lanterns, local jewellery and trinkets, clothes, organic jams, and a lot more one can find some really good stuff here.

I bought a handwoven pashmina shawl & a few stoles for mum & myself. I also picked up 2 bottles of apricot jams from the organic stores as delicious souvenirs for my younger brother.

    What a beauty! ❤
Day 4 was the most exciting one for me. Why? If the thrill of walking on thin ice doesn’t tempt you enough, the panoramic view of the Indus & Zanskar rivers merging into one together with the majestic mountains in the background will charm you off the highway and towards Sangam.

Where dream & reality converge 😱❤
On day 5 and my last day in heaven we drove to this serene lake just about a 160 km drive from Leh. It popular for being one of the most beautiful lakes in Ladakh. The seemingly ten-minute crossing will take more than an hour giving you the “so close yet so far” feels.

    Au revoir Ladakh 😊
Apart from being able to re-live that 3 Idiots moment or that Satrangi Re one from Dil Se, this is the closest you are going to go to China without a visa as 60% of this trans-boundary lake lies in Tibet. Truly a lake where dreams and reality converges!
