Owing to my opportunist attitude I am always on a lookout for visiting more places in lesser time. And so while planning our travel to Chennai for attending a friend's wedding, I suggested that we explore the long due hill station: the kolli hills.

I had heard about the place from a friend at work. He had visited the hill station with not so high expectations but surprisingly fell in love with it. I saw a couple of pictures that he had taken and since then I had this place on my list.

Kolli Hills is about 360 km from Chennai. Even though the place didn't qualify as the most nearby spot, I insisted that we visit this one. And such were my lovely friends who decided to go with the plan despite not having heard of the place much.

While reading about the place I found out that the route had 70 hairpin bends. But more than being a cause of worry people seemed rather excited about them. And now I know why!

The road leading to Kolli hills was spectacular. Owing to its proper construction and management it made our ride so thrilling and joyous. The route was such that one could stop at any point and enjoy the view. Also, the weather made it all so much better.

Even though the travel was of 7 hours, there were multiple places to stop by. We chose the route via Coimbatore and that particular route seemed to have the best roads and food halts. We loved the road filled with Arecanut trees (pakku maram) and how their aroma has taken over.

And since I am a woman and our demands seldom seek rest, I further insited that we opt for a bike ride. Also, since I wasn't to be the one driving I was even more excited. So with my friends and their infuriated spirits, we set off to the offbeat paradise of Kolli hills.

Through that same friend, I had booked a homestay in Kolli hills. I have this weird penchant for home stays. I feel that nothing else lets you experience the local essence better than staying in such home stays. Also, I loved how rustic yet clean the place was kept.

The falls were situated in a valley and surrounded by mountains. The fierce sound of the falls and the tickling splashes of water near it, felt so exhilarating. The water was ice chilled. Also, the place had a small room which could be used for changing purpose.

With a trail stretching up to a distance of just 1 kilometre from the Arapaleeswarar Temple, a trek to Agaya Gangai waterfalls must be a vital part of your Kolli trip. If I were to give you a top pick from kolli hills then this would be it.
  • Arapaleeshwar Temple
    Arapaleeshwar Temple
Being one of the major attractions of Kolli hills we decided to visit the Arrapaleshwar temple. The Arapaleeswarar Temple was built by the then-ruler Valvil Ori. Dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple stands as a witness to the great Dravidian style of architecture until today.

It was a small temple with statues of various gods and goddesses apart from Arapaleeswarar God and Aram Valartha Nayagi goddess. The entrance of the temple had various shops from where we purchased our offerings. We attended the morning prayers and felt so at peace.

Much famed for being a home to medicinal plants in abundance, Tampcol Medicinal Farm in Kolli Hills was a splendid beauty. Run by the Tamilnadu state government, the place was an endless stretch of beauty. It was so enthralling to see such a puposeful landscape ❤️

The farm was located on the way to Vaasaloorpatti. We visited the place while going back from Semmedu. We learned that the medicinal plants, shrubs, and herbs grown at this farm are widely used in the production of Unani, Siddha and Ayurvedic products all across the country.

Located at a distance of just 3 kilometres from Semmedu, the Botanical garden was one rejuvenating place. The place had a beautiful Rose Garden, a majestic view-point, eco-friendly cottages, and a fun-filled Children’s Park. We thoroughly enjoyed this walk through the greens.

With this, we all fell in love with the kolli hills and I was successful in seeking redemption. Staying in basic houses and exploring uncommercialized places, such is the beauty of these off beat places. Also, the ride to these hills was a beauty in itself. ~ Until next time ~
