  • Ho Chi Minh
    Ho Chi Minh
Vietnam's largest city, a chaotic blur and a place that is full of life, Ho Chi Minh is the target destination for most people in Vietnam. It's culture, along with its packed markets, beautiful temples and sleek skyscrapers led me on an unforgettable journey of discovery

With a layover at Bangkok, I reached Ho Chi Minh in about 7 and a half hours. I didn't really have a concrete plan so initially, I found a cheap place to stay which was the Phan Anh Backpackers Hostel. Rooms at like Rs 700 and below! A modest place with the above view.

I was loving the humble vibes of the narrow and crowded alleys just outside my place. The plus point was that I was near a lot of great tourist attractions and amazing places which I had to check out so, after resting and a little bit roaming around that day, I got to it.
  • Bình Tây Market
    Bình Tây Market
I'd heard about the Bin Tay Market and apparently, it's one of the best markets to shop and eat, in Ho Chi Minh. When I got there, the jam packed market was overwhelming. I also had some flashbacks to walking in the narrow streets of the Karol Bagh market :P Bustling and hustling

Some of the amazing artwork there... The messy market had all sorts of goods, and the best thing was its authentic atmosphere. Originally built by the French in 1880s, it is Cholon's main market. It also has a sublime clock tower nearby. A crazy walk.

I had an amazing traditional Vietnamese delicacy, the Bun Rieu!(shoutout to shop no. 27) It's a delicious combination of meat, veggies, rice and soup and is a pretty famous dish. Dodging all those scooters while walking through the market was worth it after all ;D

Next up was the War Remnants Museum. The iconic museum portrayed the harsh effects of the Vietnam War on civilians beautifully and powerfully. US weapons, bombs, artillery pieces, tanks and armoured vehicles were displayed outside the museum.

A Pulitzer prize winning photo showing the disturbing scene of a mother and her children swimming across a river to escape US bombs from air strikes, taken by Kyoichi Sawada. Many such atrocities documented there made it a solemn atmosphere and an eye opening experience.

My last stop there was one of Vietnam's most famous churches, the Notre Dame Cathedral. Named after Virgin Mary, the majestic structure with Neo-Romanesque architecture was beautiful to gape at. It was built between 1877-83.

The bells of the church! It had two bell towers and was constructed during the French reign. It was also damaged a little in the war. Interestingly, all of its building materials were imported from France, but some of them were replaced with local materials when repairs were made

I've always loved going to huge churches like this because of the silence, and the calm environment. Its interior was vast, airy and beautiful. I enjoyed observing the crowd and the respectful surroundings.

The impressively painted stained glass windows...Being in Ho Chi Minh City was a blast, and I especially relished wandering through the crowded streets and tasting random food. At times a sensory overload, the city was the perfect blend of history, nature and easy-going people!
