The small yet charming town of Bruges in Belgium was on top of my list during our Europe tour. This was for two reasons mainly - Chocolate and Beer! But the town has so much more to offer than just that. Little did I know, wince I stepped foot here, I'd be entering a fairy tale!
  • Bruges
    Bruges
The entire city had this gothic yet fairytale charm, where the buildings have a strong medieval resemblance making you feel like you've steeped into a classic "Once Upon a Time" fairy tale land.

The cobble stone streets, the overgrown bushes and the flowers that are vibrant pop of colour in the old world-esque vibe of this cute Belgian town has me enraptured

You have got to be lying if this doesn't give you strong Romeo and Juliet vibes, or atleast Tangled!

The entire town might as well be the perfect set up for the next big Dinsey princess movie! It's that beautiful

We spent a good 3 hours just gawking at the beauty of this town, just aimlessly going from one street to another and whipping out cameras out. We finally had exhausted ourselves and ended up on the same street where we started off, so we decided it was time to head for some food
  • The Olive Tree Brugge

We had some lamb patty on brioche bun with a rocket leave salad at this cute little restuarant we found on the street. The food was delicious.

Before we continued exploring, I HAD to grab these waffles. Because let's be honest, if you went to Belgium and didn't have the waffles here, did you even go?

    Basilica of the Holy Blood
For the remainder of that day, we decided to visit the Basilica of the Holy Blood. This cathedral houses a vial of Christ's blood, which is displayed inside. It also houses a crown on display besides some other artefacts of significance

The ornate design and the stained glass windows give an old world charm to this church.

We ended the night at a local bar a few blocks from our hotel. It so turns out that this was the night when Belgium was playing against Panama. The night was filled with revelry, beer and football
  • Cambrinus
    Cambrinus
The pub offers 400 varieties of IPAs, craft beers and ales. A must visit at night.

I did come here for the beer and chocolates, so no way I was leaving without trying then throughout my stay in Bruges!

We happened to be lucky during our visit, as we got to witness the ongoing.Triennale Brugge Art exhibition on the "Liquid City" theme. For an art enthusiast, this was a dream come true.
  • Markt 1

The artists use contemporary art to display concepts as a commentary on environmental and social issues. it was a day well spent, admiring the strong statements made by art.

This clever installation is made of 5 tonnes of plastic waste pulled out of the Pacific Ocean. It was turned into a 4 story tall blue whale.

These art installations didn't just make for strong statements and great art, but also great backdrops for everyone's pictures. Tourists kept flocking to these to get their picture taken! This one was the Obba- a floating island

Of all the installations I saw, this one has to be hands down my favourite. The bright orange and pink structure looks beautiful floating in the middle of the water.

I could have stayed inside this canal all day, it was that beautiful. The colours are strongly reminiscent of flamenco dancers, and to nobody's surprise this installation was constructed by a Spanish firm "selgascano"!

After spending good time at the Triennale Brugge, we had built up quite an appetite. We scarfed down some "Moules et Frites" or mussels and fries, before heading out again!

But once again, dessert is mandatory. And my trust with waffles wasn't quite complete yet. This time I ditched the fresh berries and went full sin- whipped cream, syrup AND Nutella!
  • Chocolaterie Sukerbuyc
    Chocolaterie Sukerbuyc
We weren't quite done with our dessert quota yet, so we headed to the famous Sukerbuyc chocolaterie. Sukerbuyc translates to "sugar belly". And boy, did we have one!
  • Chocolaterie Sukerbuyc

The entire store is my childhood dream come true. Each inch of the store is decked with chocolates, in all shapes and sizes and flavours!
  • Chocolaterie Sukerbuyc

If there was ever a grown ups version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory, this would be the perfect set!
  • Chocolaterie Sukerbuyc

We bought a tonne of chocolates from here - I would highly recommend the praline crunch truffle and the hazelnut mocha fill.

Within the shop there were also exhibits of the tools they use. For instance, this mound that makes these chocolates.

This was the highlight though- it’s the best hot chocolate you’ll ever have. These hot choc pops are meant to be just dipped into hot milk and you’ll have a cup of the warmest, most delicious drink in your hands!

after the chocolate extravaganza, the next thing we HAD to do was take a boat ride down the many canals of Brugge. The city has just as many canals as they have waffles and chocolate shops
  • Huidenvettersplein
    Huidenvettersplein
They don’t call Brugge the “Venice of north” for nothing. The canals are spread throughout the city and they all have take you to beautiful places. It’s like every other building in Brugge looks like a castle, just like the one we saw here

I couldn’t leave Brugge without trying “French” fries here, who’s origin has been the topic of debate for centuries- is it French or Belgian? I can’t answer the question, but I can try the fries! I got mine to munch on during the boat ride. Here they serve it with Mayo- yep!

Once we got off the boat ride, we were famished. Not quite ready to leave the fairytale land of Brugge anytime soon, but definitely looking forward to lunch, our last meal in Brugge. We had to try the Flemish style course- I had seen raving reviews online. All worth the hype!

In true Belgian style, the restaurant was filled with these wise and 100% legitimate sayings about beer!

The food was great- but the humour was even better!

By the end of our meal, I wasn’t so sad about leaving, because this restaurant’s “decor” had me in splits. Or maybe it was just the beer, but we’ll never know

It was time to bid adieu to Brugge, finally closing the book on my tryst with this beautiful town. My trip in the fairy tale land had finally come to an end. Everything from the food to the people to the views and the beer- right will definitely be in my top 10 alway
