I was at Sirsi for some work and while I was there a local told me about Banavasi. I, being a huge fan of places with historical value, decided to take a short trip to the small sleepy town of Banavasi in the hilly Western ghats of Uttara Karnataka.

As I crossed the market of the small town selling fruits, vegetables, flowers and other things, I noticed how quiet the town was with not much happening. To communicate with the locals was quite a task since their accent and slang was hard to catch even though I spoke Kannada.

When I finally did understood, I was told how the town was the seat of one of the oldest empires in the region- the Kadambas and an important province in the Vijayanagara kingdom. To know that Banavasi had successfully battled against the unhindered March of time was interesting.

As the centuries passed Banavasi was called by numerous names, ruled by different dynasties. The town is surrounded by green fields around it. I had food at a khanavali (small eatery) that served a sumptuous local cuisine of breads and and fresh prepared veggies.

After lunch I visited Madhukeshwara temple, dedicated to Madhava ( a form of Vishnu), dated to the Kadamba period. The priest told me how over time several architectural additions have been done to the original structure.

I found stone structures and figures from different centuries. River Varada flows gently near the temple and I sat at the banks of the river for a while before leaving when I noticed the chariot near the entrance of the temple. According to the locals, 'jatre' was about to start.

As I ended my day at Banavasi since I had to take a night train to Bangalore, it made me realise how a small town like this can have a unique charm of its own. The rural setting, nature and culture of Banavasi is waiting to be explored.
